2015 Dietary Guideline Meeting – Staying Tuned In

On Jan 13 and 14, the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee met for th2nd time; this public meeting was much anticipated, and the committee was expected to identify their key focus areas and topics, and give insight into potential changes to the current dietary guidelines.

On Day 1, three invited experts gave presentations followed by committee discussion; while the meeting was public, only committee members and the invited experts could participate in the discussion. The topics presented were:

  * Dietary Guidelines: Responsibilities and Opportunities
  *   Dietary Guidelines and Sustainability
  * Approaches to Dietary Pattern Analyses: Potential to Inform Guidance

Day 2 began with nearly 50 oral testimonies of no more than 3 minutes each. The opportunity to provide testimony is open to the public, and granted on a first come, first serve basis. Testimonies were given by commodity groups, trade and professional organizations, industry and the general public. Following the oral testimonies, each of the 5 subcommittees presented a status report, which included a preliminary list of their prioritized research questions.
