Job Title: Healthy Communities Intern, Spring 2014

Location/ Hours: Intern will report to the Brooklyn District Public Health Office in Bedford Stuyvesant and work on
projects in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brownsville and/or East New York. This internship requires a commitment of 15-20 office
hours/week through June 2014.

Salary and Benefits: $15/hour

Background: In 2003, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) established a District
Public Health Office in North/Central Brooklyn (BKDPHO) to situate additional health resources in high-poverty
neighborhoods and communities. The BKDPHO focuses efforts in the neighborhoods of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brownsville,
Bushwick, and East New York. The mission of the BKDPHO is to reduce health disparities and promote health equity by
targeting resources, programs, and attention to these high-need neighborhoods of North and Central Brooklyn. In
September 2010, the DPHO launched Healthy Schools - Brooklyn to assist public schools in Brownsville and East New
York (ENY) in developing and implementing school wellness policies to increase opportunities for healthy eating and
physical activity. This work compliments the BKDPHO Creating Healthy Places to Live, Work, and Play Initiative which
aims to address gaps in access to active living opportunities through policy, systems and environment change.

Position Overview: Intern will be responsible for spring safe routes to school events and will coordinate the
communication between the wellness teams, school administration, parent and community volunteers, and active
transportation partners in preparation for spring events. The intern will assist team and school stakeholders in
completing assessment tools looking at the built environment and supports and barriers to student walking to school.
Following completion of the assessment, the intern will work with schools to implement NYC DOE Wellness Policies and
assist schools in pursuing resources that will increase physical activity time. Bengali or Spanish speaking interns
preferred.

Responsibilities:
• Contact participating schools and identify existing school wellness leadership team and/or meet with school
administration to recruit for walking and/or biking activities in the spring semester.
• Identify school liaisons and community organizations for the project, and recruit staff, parent and community
volunteers.
• Conduct street audits with schools participating in Walk to School Activities.
• Coordinate Walk to School activities, including announcements at parent meetings and events at schools,
planning logistics for the walk to school days, assist schools in planning routes and getting the appropriate
permissions, track the number of participants in all events;
• Participate in Bike Event team meetings when applicable;
• Assist BKDPHO staff in National Bicycle and Pedestrian Documentation Project;
• By June 2014, summarize findings of completed assessments, present back to wellness team their
accomplishments over the semester in implementing wellness policies that increase healthy eating and physical
activity in the school and offer feedback to the school regarding their next steps;
• Provide brief summary report to DPHO and enter schools data into tracking database.

Qualifications:
• Master’s Degree(s) in Public Health or related field preferred
• Some training in community public health and outreach desirable
• Strong communication (written and verbal) required
• Computer software/hardware skills required including database experience
• Fluency in Spanish
• Familiarity and comfort level in using public transportation

A 200 bed Skilled Nursing Facility in Brooklyn, New York is seeking an experienced Registered Dietician to manage both the clinical and food production aspects as the Director of Food & Nutrition Services. The candidate is responsible for the overall functioning of the Department, including formulating and executing the policies and procedures governing the nutritional status of residents and quality food service operation. Education

Scope of Work:
1. Provide leadership and nutrition expertise in evaluating and choosing foods for HPNAP purchased and donated support. Evaluate foods for compliance with HPNAP nutrition standards, safety, value, storage life, handling and use, and cultural relevance.
• Evaluate current warehouse inventory 1x/week for proper grant qualifications, nutrition attributes of food and Kosher markings of food.
• Update database with current Kosher markings and nutrition attributes of foods.
2. Educate Food Bank staff and Emergency Food Programs (EFP's) in the importance of providing healthy foods that support the current US Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Develop promotional materials to support these educational activities.
3. Review all site visit monitoring data from MES visits as well as New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene inspections.
• Based on site visit data coordinate/conduct appropriate follow up to sites to ensure compliance with established food safety and food bank standards.
• Provide/Coordinate specific technical assistance for FB programs as necessary.
• Develop and update resources for nutrition quality and food safety to address program concerns as noted by site monitors and NRM. Continue to provide permanent materials that can be posted at the program as a regular reminder about nutrition and food safety.
• Work with Director of Member Services and Site Monitoring Staff to address specific food safety and nutrition concerns at member programs.
• Assess food safety and sanitation issues of programs using the site monitoring forms. Ensure information is shared with other funders (via FeedNYC database) to provide information about visits conducted and ensure a consistent message to the programs.
4. Provide technical assistance to EFROs regarding food product concerns, such as food product dating, labeling, storage, food recalls, etc.

• Update the online ordering page monthly with Tips from the Nutritionist and monthly food Safety and nutrition articles.
5. Assist with the development of marketing strategies for products and services provided to member agencies/sites.
6. Provide/coordinate/facilitate food/nutrition education for contractor staff. Provide technical assistance/training to site monitoring staff on evaluating HPNAP supported prepared meals (soup kitchens) and food packages for compliance with HPNAP nutrition standards. Training includes how to provide nutrition feedback regarding meals and packages that do not meet HPNAP standards, and when to refer to NRM for follow-up visit.
7. Act as a consultant to contractor staff regarding food safety and sanitation practices performed by contractor and performed in EFROs by reviewing food safety monitoring reports and providing technical assistance. Monitor food safety and sanitation issues of EFROs noted during community program specialist visits.
8. Manage the Food Safety and Sanitation Supply distribution program.
• Track inventory of Food Safety and Sanitation Supplies.
• Ensure that proper amounts of FS+S supplies are in stock.
• Bid to at least 3 bidders if replacements are necessary.

It is a neighborhood health oasis that provides free health, fitness, and performing-arts programming for over 1,000 youth each week. Job Description and Requirements
1) 40 hour per week position available in a Long Term Care facility in Gloversville New York. (facility is located 40 minutes from Schenectady NY)

2) Per Diem positions available across New York and New Jersey for short and long term assignments. please email resume with contact information to be placed on our RD database.

NutraSource Consultants is a registry of dietitians who provide coverage in long term care facilities across New York and New Jersey. All associate Registered Dietitians have a bachelor's or advanced degree in Foods, Nutrition or related sciences from an accredited college or university. Most are members of the American Dietetic Association, or the professional dietetic association of their state. Our listings of consultants are available for long term or temporary consulting assignments.
