Today, 41 members of the Food Marketing Workgroup wrote to Perfetti, Haribo, Tootsie Roll Industries, American Licorice, and Topps<http://cspinet.org/new/201412041.html> to ask them to adopt strong policies on food marketing to children. As you will recall, we chose these companies because they manufacture candy that appeals to children (Airheads, gummy bears, Tootsie Rolls and Pops, Red Vines, and Ring Pops), and they do not belong to the Children's Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative (CFBAI), nor does their trade association, the National Confectioners' Association. Most of the companies advertise on Nickelodeon.

Attached is the letter to Perfetti. The other letters are similar. (Let us know if you’d like copies.)

Please let us know if you can help get the word out through social media to continue to encourage these companies to stop marketing unhealthy food to children. Below are models.

It used to be that candy was an occasional treat for kids. No longer! These days, candy is a significant source of calories in kids’ diets, beating out the calories they get from burgers, fries, or pancakes/waffles. Please join us in calling on candy companies to stop marketing unhealthy food to kids: https://www.cspinet.org/takeaction/#/48

Parents and companies have a shared responsibility to protect kids from diabetes and obesity. Nestle, Hershey, and Mars have stopped advertising their candy on children’s television networks like Nickelodeon. Share if you agree that all candy companies should. https://www.cspinet.org/takeaction/#/48

.@Nestle<mailto:.@Nestle>, @MarsGlobal & @HersheysKisses don’t advertise candy on kids TV. Other candy co’s should do the same https://www.cspinet.org/takeaction/#/48

Ask candy companies @MrOwl, @RedVines, @RingPopOfficial, @AirheadsCandy & Haribo to stop advertising to kids: https://www.cspinet.org/takeaction/#/48

The last thing kids need is another candy ad. Ask companies to stop marketing candy to kids: https://www.cspinet.org/takeaction/#/48

What the world needs now is more fruits and vegetables, not another candy commercial aimed at kids! https://www.cspinet.org/takeaction/#/48

Please let us know if you can help get the word out.

Best,

Margo Wootan and Jessica Almy
