FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR COOKING MATTERS AT THE STORE IMPLEMENTATION

Please visit www.grants.nokidhungry.org<http://www.grants.nokidhungry.org/> to apply

No child should grow up hungry in America, but one in five children struggles with hunger. The No Kid Hungry campaign connects kids in need with nutritious food and teaches their families how to cook healthy, affordable meals. By doing this, we surround children in this nation with healthy food where they live, learn and play.

Families on a tight budget report that the cost of healthy groceries is their biggest barrier to making healthy meals at home. Food skills, like smart shopping, can help overcome that barrier. Cooking Matters at the Store is a free program of the No Kid Hungry campaign that empowers families to stretch their food budgets so their children get healthy meals at home.

Cooking Matters at the Store<http://www.cookingmattersatthestore.org/> is a guided grocery store tour that empowers families to stretch their food budgets so their children get healthy meals at home. Tours can be led by any individual, in any community, anywhere people shop for food. Cooking Matters at the Store participants are adults who belong to low-income families and make a majority of the food purchasing decisions in the household. Additionally, Share Our Strength places additional focus on reaching moms with kids ages 5 and under.

During the 1.5 hour-tour, participants are empowered with four key food skills:
· Reading food labels
· Comparing unit prices
· Finding whole grain foods
· Identifying three ways to purchase produce

Organizations interested in providing Cooking Matters at the Store tours may apply to Share Our Strength for a grant to help support their efforts. Tours are generally led by volunteers, however grant funds may be used for the following purposes:
· To help eliminate barriers that may keep potential participants from attending, such as transportation to and from the store.
· As tour incentives, such as grocery store gift cards that cover the cost of a $10 challenge at the end of the tour, or snacks for tour participants.
· For costs incurred by your organization, such as staffing costs, outreach to identify participants, or reimbursement for expenses incurred by volunteer tour leaders.

Grant Amount: Grant amounts are determined based on the number of participants you expect to reach, at a level of up to $10/participant. If you plan to reach a total of 250 participants, you may apply for a grant of up to $2,500.

Tours should serve an average of at least 6 participants per tour. It is recommended that tours have no fewer than 4 and no more than 8 participants. Please keep this in mind as you estimate the number of participants you hope to reach in your own programming. For example, reaching 250 participants typically requires leading 42 tours.

Grant Requirements:
· Minimum Participant Reach: Grants are available for organizations that plan to reach a minimum of 100 tour participants before end of the grant period on September 1, 2014. Organizations planning to reach 250+ will receive the highest priority for funding.
· Organizations interested in leading Cooking Matters at the Store tours should meet the following general criteria:
o Capacity to lead Cooking Matters at the Store tours in your community, including but not limited to recruit participants, identify tour leaders, and reach out to grocery stores
o Reach among low-income mothers of children ages 5 and under
o Commitment and enthusiasm among staff to implement the program
· All grant applicants must be 501c3 organizations in good standing or other nonprofit organizations eligible to receive grants and tax-deductible donations (including churches and other faith-based organizations).
· All grant recipients will be asked to provide data to Share Our Strength confirming the number of tour participants they have reached within one week of the tour date(s).
· All tours supported through this grant must be completed prior to September 1, 2014.

If you do not qualify for funding:

Cooking Matters at the Store tours are often led by volunteers, and because many organizations find the program offers useful skills for their volunteers, staff, clients or constituencies, many organizations may not require a grant to offer the tours, and are able to incorporate it as a regular program they provide.

You are still eligible to lead a Cooking Matters at the Store tour in your community with the free training, free curriculum and free incentive materials. If you are interested in providing Cooking Matters at the Store tours but do not wish to apply for a grant please CLICK HERE<http://www.tfaforms.com/288063>.
