For those of you who are applying this year--a word of warning! Questions
such as those below are certainly fair game! And since most of you will be
interviewing after the election you should be able to answer these questions
based on your own opinion, as well as based on the health care plans of
whoever wins the election, and on the basis of what is going on in your own
state! The young man's response is reasonable but should take into account
the above. Anyone not prepared for this type of question will have a hard
time convincing a Committee as to their interest in health care reform and
access.

> my career..."

Subject: Re: [HLTHPROF] Advice about interview - after the fact

The PARM gives contact information for the advisor to notate difficulties in
an applicant's interview to the director of admissions at medical programs
as well as any instructions given to students to report on any perceived
problems with the interview. That said, it does not surprise me that
questions relating to the current election and candidates'/parties' plans on
the health care system are being asked. It is reasonable to expect that
these students are involved with political campaigns or know of
friends/family who are... especially as health care is one of the top issues
of the campaign.

Given that there are supposedly so many young people who are energized to
action in this political year, I would consider the questions that were
posted as being fair game and expected. That said, the student's response
seems fair as well. I have mentioned this often to my students regarding
resources on medical ethics and health politics that should be reviewed
throughout one's application cycle (and before).
