One of the fastest-growing needs of the New York metro community is for
qualified and professionally-trained interpreters and translators. If you
are fluent in English and Spanish and looking to add a skill to your resume,
then the Certificate in Translation and/or Certificate in Interpretation may
be right for you. This program provides you with up to 120 hours of
professional training in translation and interpretation techniques. Our
skilled instructors have the educational background and the real-world
experience to best prepare you for work in this exciting and growing field.
The courses run at night, from our convenient Manhattan location, and the
program can be completed in a year. This is a non-credit certificate

Advanced Grammar (Elective)
The course reviews persistent grammatical difficulties, focuses on
systematic vocabulary building, and covers the more complex points and
nuances of advanced Spanish grammar to improve translation and writing
skills. The course reviews structure, syntax, and grammar through

The course emphasizes advanced written composition and advanced vocabulary
and idiomatic expressions. Topics will include grammatical matters such as

Interpretation in Medical Settings
This course exposes the student to interpreting in a variety of settings
such as: hospitals, clinics, doctor's offices, mental health and psychiatric
facilities. The course includes consecutive interpretation, simultaneous
interpretation and sight translation as well as the role of the interpreter
and ethics. Course is conducted in English and Spanish. This is a required
course.
Interpretation in Legal Settings
This course focuses on the court interpreter profession in the United
States. The class covers basic court and legal terminology and colloquial
language as it relates to concepts that appear in the courtrooms,
depositions and reveals issues that affect defendants or respondents with
limited English Proficiency within the courtroom culture. Course is
conducted in English and Spanish. This is a required course.
English Grammar Review (Elective)
This class will serve as a review of basic English grammar concepts with
emphasis on comprehension and text analysis. The course will review basic
grammar rules, the most common parts of speech, tenses, and sentence

speakers. It is aimed at those professionals who feel that their
pronunciation and/or intonation of American English interferes with their
ability to render a proficient interpretation. Class is conducted in

Note Taking for Interpreters (Elective)
This course emphasizes the importance of note-taking for interpreters.
Several techniques are reviewed so that students develop their own practical
method. Course is conducted in English and Spanish.
English Oral Skills (Elective)
This course focuses in developing oral skills, including pronunciation, with
an emphasis on oral presentations in both languages. These oral
presentations will be videotaped and later analyzed by the group. Course is
conducted in English.
