The Summer MedPrep Program

MedPrep is a free, summer enrichment program targeting traditionally underrepresented and/or economically disadvantaged New York City and New Jersey resident college freshmen and sophomores interested in attending medical school. MedPrep is a 3 year summer commitment designed to give students an opportunity to develop key skills and competencies important to success on the MCAT and in medical school.

Accepted New Jersey resident students begin the MedPrep program at New Jersey Medical School.
Accepted New York resident students begin the MedPrep program at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons.
The MedPrep Program is best suited for candidates without summer obligations as the program is full-time.
Who Qualifies: Freshman and Sophomore students with a minimum 3.0 GPA who have completed a college level chemistry course and a college level english composition course. Must be a resident of the 5 boroughs of New York City or New Jersey.
Cost: None
Stipend: Determined upon acceptance.
Length: 3 consecutive full-time summers.

Human Anatomy at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore Maryland 

This four week course meets for 4 hours each day, 5 days a week. It is designed to give undergraduate students an introduction to all aspects of human anatomy, and includes demonstrations using human cadavers. A regional approach will be employed, beginning with the thorax and abdomen, continuing with the limbs, and ending with the head and neck.

Who Qualifies: Sophomore students. Must have completed Sophomore year when you start program.
Cost: $3800 + $45 a night to stay in dorm
Length: June 6 - July 1, 2011

Summer Medical and Dental Education Program

Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP) is a FREE (full tuition, housing, and meals) six-week summer academic enrichment program that offers freshman and sophomore college students intensive and personalized medical and dental school preparation. This program has 12 different locations across the country.

Who Qualifies: Freshman and Sophomores with a minimum of a 2.5 GPA who:

identify with a group that is racially/ethnically underrepresented in medicine and/or dentistry (as defined independently by each program site) 
comes from an economically or educationally disadvantaged background 
has demonstrated interest in issues affecting under-served populations
Cost: Free
Stipend: Varies by program site
Length: 6 weeks; dates vary by site
Application Deadline: March 1, 2011. Recommended date: February 1, 2011
