Upper East Side Orthopedic/Musculoskeletal Disease Hospital.
Part-time paid position in Cell Biology / Biochemistry laboratory.
Benchtop research related to the alteration of orthopedic/dental implants to
promote the attachment/function of bone cells and biointegration. The
project will utilize chemical engineering methodologies for the surface
modification and analysis of metallic biomaterials as well as in vitro cell
culture assays to study their altered biological properties. Fundamental
aim of project is to modulate the physico-chemical properties of the surface
oxide layer to promote the attachment of bone-forming cells via specific
cell surface receptors and the regulated growth of bone onto the implant.
Opportunity to work on a project which is now developing the next generation
of orthopedic and dental biomaterials. Studies utilize methods of analyzing
bone cell adhesion, mechanical force of cell attachment and phenotypic
expression following the binding of cell integrin receptors to a biomimetic
protein adsorbed to the implant. Critical conformational changes in the
biomimetic protein which occur upon its adsorption to altered materials will
be also measured. Strong preference will be given to recent graduates with
a major in biology or chemistry with at least one year of experience working
with cell culture and basic molecular biology techniques such as RNA
isolation, qRT-PCR, gel electrophoresis and Western blot. Position available
beginning immediately.
