LASER SURGERY CARE IS A PRIVATE SURGICAL PRACTICE IN MANHATTAN WITH A REPUTATION FOR EXCELLENCE IN PATIENT CARE AND RESEARCH. EXCELLENT POSITION FOR STUDENTS APPLYING TO MEDICAL SCHOOL WITH GAP YEAR.

EMAIL RESUME TO [log in to unmask] DETAILS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.

Laser Surgery Care is a colorectal surgery practice in Manhattan for a predominantly gay male population.Although the public is largely aware of the lesions caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) in the cervix, it is less aware that precancerous lesions (HSIL) can also develop in the anus due to HPV infection. At LSC, we screen for warts and HSIL using anal cytology, HPV typing, and high-resolution anoscopy (HRA), and then ablate the lesions with or without sedation. We also screen for other STDs. In addition to ablation of dysplasia, we also perform rubber band ligation for internal hemorrhoids, external hemorrhoidectomies, fistulectomies, and abscess drainage.

As medical assistant, you will have a hands-on-role in the care of our patients. You will do the initial history for new patients and assist the surgeon during HRAs and surgery. You will call patients with results, do blood draws, and prepare and ship laboratory specimens. The site is also very active in research. Four prospective clinical protocols are currently underway, including trials on the safety of a new multivalent HPV vaccine and on the rates of recurrence of HSIL in HIV-positive individuals. Past medical assistants have contributed to publications on topics including the relative insensitivity of anal cytology in detecting HSIL and HPV typing as a complementary screening tool; the superiority of nucleic acid amplification to traditional cultures for detection of Gonorrhea and Chlamydia; and the shift in incidence of anal cancer from older women to younger, immunocompromised men and the advances in treatment methods due to earlier detection of anal cancer through HRA. If you would like to pioneer your own study, we would be very open to that.

Please be advised, this is a full-time job requiring a full-time commitment. Forty percent of patients are HIV-positive, and you will be assisting directly in surgical procedures. If you are not comfortable with this, do not apply. If you are comfortable with this and are hired, welcome to one of the hands-down best premedical experiences available!
