**Did you know that a large proportion of the US population lacks sufficient general literacy to effectively undertake and execute the medical treatments and preventive healthcare it needs? Evidence shows that patients often misinterpret or do not understand medical information given to them by clinicians. This lack of understanding can lead to medication errors, missed appointments, and adverse medical outcomes. You can help.

The NY Methodist Hospital Health Literacy Program is recruiting! The Health Literacy Program is designed to empower patients to be more involved in their health care decisions by helping them understand and apply basic health information.
Health Literacy volunteers work individually or in pairs to present health-related information in the waiting rooms of Outpatient Pediatrics, Outpatient Adult Medical, and Women’s Clinics on the NY Methodist Campus (Park Slope, Brooklyn). Volunteers present to a group of patients as well as provide one-on-one interactions with waiting patients.

Health Literacy volunteers are trained to teach patients on the following topics: navigating and understanding over-the-counter and prescription medication labels; proper dosing and managing multiple medications; and nutrition basics including navigating the Nutrition Facts Label.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in a community health, health outreach, health promotion, nutrition, social work or pre-med program at a two or four year college. This is a position for students who feel comfortable speaking publicly with diverse groups of people. There is a minimum commitment of 6 months.
