Subject: Paid Internship Opportunity NYC Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene

NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Bureau of Intergovernmental
Affairs Position Available: Intern-Community Affairs

Want to learn more about the role of community outreach in public health?
The Bureau of Intergovernmental Affairs within the NYC Department of Health
and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) works to build strong partnerships between
elected officials, community stakeholders, and community leaders at one of
the most progressive public health departments in the country. The Bureau
strategically disseminates information on a grass-roots level to New York
City's many distinct and diverse communities. This communication is
particularly critical to our ability to improve partnerships with other
organizations.
The Bureau is currently seeking a student to assist in our community
outreach efforts to promote the Queens National Children's Study (NCS) in
partnership with Mount Sinai School of Medicine. The selected candidate will
represent DOHMH at public events and project meetings to promote NCS and key
Department initiatives, such as Take Care New York. The intern will enhance
participation with NCS by partnering with key stakeholders (elected
officials, community based organizations, faith based groups, etc.) making a
concerted effort to encourage the involvement of non-English speaking
communities. The intern will maintain a database of key contacts and events,
facilitate meetings, and work on other community affairs responsibilities.
Travel within the five Boroughs of New York City is required (up to 75%).

This 19-hour part-time, paid intern position offers significant
responsibility and provides critical support to the Department's community
affairs activities.
The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational and analytical
skills, with an interest in public health, public relations, and/or health
education. Students with experience in public speaking and community
organization are highly desired. Ability to work as part of a team.
Knowledge of a foreign language, a plus.
