Volunteer Service Description


Work Assignment:	Language Services
Location:		Belaire. Room 10A


Position Overview:
Language Services Department provides language assistance to HSS patients with Limited English Proficiency. The volunteer is responsible for assisting staff with interpreting and translation assignments, as well as supporting the department administratively. All volunteers without previous medical interpreter training will undergo a 40-hour medical interpreter training.


Specific Duties:
•	Shadow experienced interpreters as they work with patients, families and providers
•	Interpret for patients, families and providers under supervision of staff interpreters
•	Translate and edit key documents in collaboration with staff translators
•	Compile medical terminology for department’s shared glossaries
•	Assist with the clerical and organizational needs of the department 
•	Schedule and coordinate requests for interpreters, collaborating with both hospital staff and outside agencies


Qualifications:
•	Fluency in spoken and written English and Spanish 
•	Excellent customer service and communication skills
•	Attention to detail
•	Self-motivated
•	Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook


Preferred Qualifications:
•	College-level coursework in English and a second language
•	Previous interpreting and/or translation experience
•	Interest in pursuing a career in language services, interpreting, translation, or health care
•	Proficiency in Microsoft Access and/or other database organization


Key Relationships: 
All volunteers working in the Language Services Department will report to the Associate Director of Service Excellence & Language Services. Volunteers should establish cordial and effective relationships with all members of HSS team. Candidates must commit to spending a minimum of 6 months as a Language Services volunteer at HSS.
