The Community Health Practice Internship at the University of Nicaragua (UNAN-Managua) provides a unique opportunity for pre-medical students, medical students, and residents/physicians to provide free medical care for the impoverished of Managua, Nicaragua. A brief description regarding the program is provided below. The information packet and application form are attached to this email. Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns regarding the program.

-Organization: National Autonomous University of Nicaragua (UNAN-Managua)
-Trip duration: 10 days

-Activities:
1. Hands-on experience working in the community health clinics and hospitals of the UNAN-Managua - includes taking patient HPI's and vital signs, performing physical examinations (i.e. pap smears, etc), discussing potential differential diagnoses with UNAN-Managua physicians, as well as opportunities to scrub in on the OR, perform deliveries, and practice suturing.
2. Make visits to family homes to identify health issues and treatments, and to update their files on record.
3. Complementary Spanish classes provided - a 3-hour session on the first day, followed by 2-hour sessions everyday thereafter, focusing on medical terminology used by patients to describe their health issues.
4. Lead health prevention sessions for the public (i.e. lectures/presentations).

-Upon completion: student certification will be provided on behalf of the university
-Next trip: Winter break. Actual dates will be chosen based on the Winter Break schedules of the applicants.
-Cost: $900 pays for lodging, breakfast, lunch, transportation, etc. excludes airfare.
