Students in Neighborhood News produce a website and a community newspaper covering the South Bronx community of Hunts Point.

In addition to those interested in journalism, Neighborhood News should appeal to students in urban studies, English, political science and sociology.

Now beginning its third year, The Hunts Point Express has been hailed by residents and community organizations for its hard-hitting stories on environmental justice issues, schools, housing, health and crime, and its vivid feature stories about daily life in a poor and underserved section of our city.

The class offers students who are exploring a career as journalists the opportunity to report and write news in the real world, reaching an audience that will hold them accountable. In addition, it offers liberal arts students in any department a way to learn to marshal and evaluate evidence and present it in an orderly and compelling fashion.

The on-line edition also gives students a place to experiment with new ways to tell stories using video, audio and interactive tools.

Students leave the class with a portfolio of published work that has led previous students to jobs and paid internships at news organizations, including the New York Times on-line and PBS.

To view The Hunts Point Express, go to www.huntspointexpress.com.

Neighborhood News, MEDP 299.70, course code 4126, will meet on Wednesdays from 10:10-1. Enrollment is limited. Hope to see some of you there.
