Fall 2008 fact-checking internship, NY Times Syndicate

The New York Times Syndicate, which offers internships every academic semester, is now gearing up for fall 2008. Senior Editor Patti Sonntag is looking for five fact checkers who can each work one day per week, Sept. 22 through Dec. 19.

The New York Times Syndicate issues columns, features, news articles and photos to more than 2,000 newspapers and other media in 80 countries. The internship is competitive, intense and fast-paced, involving fact-checking and research for senior staff working on articles by our columnists and writers, on subjects ranging from science to foreign affairs.

This internship is unpaid; applicants must be eligible for academic credit. This internship is designed for candidates intending to pursue careers as journalists and editors. The interns will be closely mentored by Times staffers.

Candidates who are chosen for the position will attend mandatory training at the New York Times Syndicate's offices on Saturday, Sept. 20 from noon - 2 p.m. Anyone who fails to attend will forfeit his or her place to another candidate.

Past interns have occasionally gotten taglines and been paid for freelance shifts. Candidates who speak a second language are at an advantage, but foreign language fluency is not required for the work. Nor is previous fact-checking experience. Business attire is required.

How to apply: Send your application to [log in to unmask] by Sept. 15. Your application must contain the following: 1) a cover letter that includes a note about which days of the week you're available; and 2) a resume. Optional: a couple of clips.
