	Spring 2009 Fact-Checking Internship, NY Times Syndicate
	
	The New York Times Syndicate, which offers internships every academic semester, is now gearing up for spring 2009. Senior editor Patti Sonntag is looking for five fact checkers who can each work one day per week, Jan. 20 through May 15.
	
	The New York Times Syndicate provides news and commentary to more than 2,000 newspapers and magazines in 80 countries. Our columnists include Christopher Hitchens, Anne Applebaum, Umberto Eco and more. 

The internship is competitive, intense and fast-paced, involving fact-checking and research for backfield editors working on articles by our columnists and writers. Subjects range from foreign affairs to fashion. Candidates who speak second languages are at an advantage. Business attire is required.

The program is designed for candidates intending to pursue careers as journalists and editors, and past interns have occasionally been paid for freelance shifts. Interns are closely mentored by NYT Syndicate staffers. 

Candidates who are chosen for the positions must attend mandatory training at The New York Times Syndicate's offices on Saturday, Jan. 17 from noon - 2 p.m. Anyone who fails to attend will forfeit his or her place to another candidate.

Spring 2009 Photo Internship, NY Times Syndicate
	
	The New York Times Syndicate, which offers photo internships every academic semester, is now gearing up for spring 2009. Photo editor Isabel Foley is looking for three interns who can each work one day per week, Jan. 20 through May 15. This internship is designed for candidates intending to pursue careers in publishing, particularly those specializing in photography/arts.
	
	The New York Times Syndicate provides news and commentary to more than 2,000 newspapers and magazines in 80 countries. Our columnists include Christopher Hitchens, Anne Applebaum, Umberto Eco and more. 

Photo interns assist editors with choosing and preparing photos and graphics to accompany articles by our columnists and writers. Subjects range from foreign affairs to fashion. Past interns have occasionally been paid for freelance shifts. Interns are closely mentored by NYT Syndicate staffers.

	Duties include:
	
	- Editing and formatting photos and graphics for delivery 
- Selecting and researching photos for articles on a variety of topics
- Scanning text and photos 
- Occasional clerical duties 
- Business attire is required	
		
	Useful skills:
	
	- Ability to use both MAC and PC systems 
- Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and MS Office suite 
- Interest in photography a plus 
- Familiarity with Quark XPress 
- Excellent communication skills 
- Pleasant and professional phone manner 
- Knowledge of the newspaper industry

	The New York Times Syndicate provides news and commentary to more than 2,000 newspapers and magazines in 80 countries. Our columnists include Christopher Hitchens, Anne Applebaum, Umberto Eco and more. 

Editorial interns assist backfield editors working on articles by our columnists and writers on subjects ranging from foreign affairs to fashion. Past interns have occasionally been paid for freelance shifts. Interns are closely mentored by NYT Syndicate staffers.

	Duties include:
	
	- Research and other general assistance to backfield editors
	- Editing and formatting articles for transmission 
- Light copy-editing 
- Occasional clerical duties 
- Business attire is required 
	
	Useful skills:
	
	- Advanced abilities in writing and editing
- Knowledge of the newspaper and publishing industry 
- Fluency in a second language a plus
- Excellent communication skills 
- Pleasant and professional phone manner
