Research Internship Opportunity at the New York State Health Foundation

The New York State Health Foundation (NYSHealth) is seeking a graduate-level Research Intern to assist with an evaluation study of a program led by faith-based organizations across New York State to prevent diabetes and manage complications of the disease.

Hours: 4 to 8 hours per week, on average
Salary: $12 per hour
Location: Midtown
Start date: Summer or Fall 2012
Expected duration: Up to 12 months

REQUIREMENTS: Excellent Excel, SPSS, and general computer skills; capacity to interpret information quickly and correctly; and ability to enter data accurately into a database are required for the position.

BACKGROUND: The New York State Health Foundation is a private Foundation dedicated to improving the health of all New Yorkers. NYSHealth has a three-part mission: expanding health insurance coverage, increasing access to high-quality health care services, and improving public and community health by educating New Yorkers about health issues and empowering communities to address them. It was established with charitable funds from the privatization of Empire Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

-----------------------

OPPORTUNITY: NYSHealth established a five-year Diabetes Campaign to reverse the diabetes epidemic in New York State. As part of the Campaign’s initiative to mobilize communities to spread programs that help prevent, identify, and manage diabetes, NYSHealth funded the Institute for Leadership (IFL) to work with faith-based organizations across New York State. IFL is engaging a critical mass of faith-based organizations and providing assistance for these organizations to identify members of their congregations at risk for diabetes and its complications; help people prevent diabetes-related complications and manage their diabetes by establishing self-management programs; and link congregation members to clinical care.

The Foundation is conducting a separate evaluation of this faith-based initiative. The evaluation includes multiple quantitative and qualitative data collection efforts.

The research intern assisting with the evaluation will be responsible for:

-Reviewing and organizing completed questionnaires using established procedures and manually entering the survey responses into a spreadsheet; -Performing administrative tasks as needed by the NYSHealth staff managing the evaluation project; -Interpreting information quickly and correctly; and -Entering data quickly and accurately into an Excel database.
