I don't want to start an argument (in whatever sense one chooses :), but I will say that:

personally, I agree with the "justify" over "persuade" -- but not, of course, with the "verbal" qualifier;

multimodal argumentation (of the sort that Michael Gilbert has written about -- but also of the sort that *many* people writing about visual and other modes of argumentation discuss) has taken off like a rocket -- not just in theory, but more importantly in practice;

AILACT can ignore that if it wants but that just makes what it does less relevant to argumentation today.

Cheers,
Leo.

The sense I propose as a result of many years of experience in the field of critical thinking is the following:

"An argument is a verbal attempt to justify a conclusion.”

The key word is “justify”. “Persuasion” is not mentioned.

At its Annual Meeting earlier this year, the AILACT Board requested a memo go out to the AILACT membership asking what projects they deemed worthy. The floor is now open and you may reply to this message or to me directly at . If you want to express your views about a project, I would appreciate hearing from you by July 10. In that way, I I could inform the committee of membership views and whether some projects received more endorsement than others. I look forward to hearing from you.
