Summer School Schedule of Classes Available on the Web
The schedule of classes for Hunter’s two summer sessions is now available on the Web.  Session I is scheduled for June 1 – July 12; Session II will run from July 19 – August 19.  To register for summer classes, students must file a Summer Intent Registration Form. Notification of a registration date will be sent by e-mail when the form is filed. The schedule of classes and form can be accessed from the home page of the Registrar’s website, http://registrar.hunter.edu.

Printing Costs Reduced to Five Cents Per Page
The cost to students for laser printing in all labs and libraries on campus has been reduced to five cents per page.  The difference in cost is being covered by the Technology Fee.  Pre-paid printing and copy cards will continue to be distributed through the end of the semester by the Student SNET Help Desk, Room 109 North.

Free Tickets for Maria Schneider Jazz Concert at the Kaye – March 18
Maria Schneider, described by Time magazine as the “most important women in jazz,” will be directing her 17-piece orchestra in a concert at the Kaye Playhouse on Thursday, March 18 at 8:00 pm.  This is the second in a series of four concerts by Ms. Schneider, who is making Hunter her home for performances and teaching. Free tickets are available to students for the March 18 concert.  Anyone who is interested should call the Kaye Playhouse box office at (212) 772-4448.

Attend Open Hearing on Structure of School of Arts & Sciences – March 24

Students are invited to participate in a review of the structure and functioning of Hunter’s School of Arts & Sciences.  President Raab has asked the Hunter College Senate to undertake this review and to submit recommendations for improvement.  The Senate has established a Special Advisory Committee to conduct the review.  The Committee will hold two open hearings on March 24, the first from 4:10 to 5:30 in Room 714 West, and the second from 5:30 to 7:00 in the Senate Conference Room, 1018 East.  The hearings are an opportunity for all members of the Hunter community to express their views on these important matters. Students are encouraged to attend.

Scholarship / Fellowship / Prize Opportunities

Clark Foundation Fellowship Program
The Clark Foundation Fellowship Program provides grants to exceptional undergraduate students to assist them in preparing for positions of leadership in community-based nonprofit organizations in New York City.  The program provides awards of $30,000, which includes a salary stipend and tuition assistance toward an appropriate master’s degree. Candidates must be nominated by their institutions.  Eligibility requirements include:
            Entering final year of undergraduate coursework;
            Demonstrated interest in management of nonprofit, community-oriented services;
            Record of leadership in student, professional, and nonprofit organizations; and
            Strong academic record
Recruitment is now in progress.  Interested students should see Nicholas Giampetruzzi in the office of the Public Service Scholar Program, Room 1643 West to obtain an application, or call (212) 772-5599.  The application deadline is April 1, 2004.

Martha Schulman Lapovsky Prize for Excellence in Women’s Studies
The Martha Schulman Lapovsky Prize for Excellence in Women’s Studies awards $1,000 to one (1) undergraduate Women’s Studies major from the January or June, 2004 graduating class.  The recipient is selected based on the demonstration of exceptional ability in Women’s Studies.  Students who wish to apply must submit a cover sheet along with a copy of an official transcript, one page statement explaining how the applicant has demonstrated exceptional ability in Women’s Studies, and a substantial piece of work, such as a scholarly article, critical essay, musical composition, dance performance, portfolio of paintings or poems, or other project.  Cover sheets and complete instructions are available in the file pockets between Rooms 1716 and1717 West.  The deadline for submissions is April 16, 2004.


Scholarship Opportunity for Single Fathers
The Male Development and Empowerment Center of Medgar Evers College is accepting applications for awards of $1,000 from the Dr. Edison O. Jackson Single Fathers Scholarship Fund.  Applicants must meet the following criteria: Single father; Demonstrate financial need; Undergraduate matriculated in a 4-year baccalaureate degree program at a CUNYinstitution (graduating seniors not eligible); Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. Application Deadline: Thursday, April 8, 2004.

U.S. Department of State: Foreign Service Exam Prep Workshop – March 30, 31
Are you interested in a career in the U.S. Diplomatic Service? The application deadline to take this year’s exam is March 24, 2004. The exam will be given on April 24. If you are planning to take this year’s exam or one in the future, you should attend:

The Foreign Service Written Exam (FSWE) Preparation Workshop. This workshop will be run by Dennis Paoli, Coordinator of the Reading/Writing Center. Students will be advised as to how to make the best use of the writing skills and methods they have developed in their college careers to give themselves the best chance to succeed at passing this challenging examination. The workshop will cover exam preparation, practice, and test-day strategy. Exam prep will be considered in the context of the academic writing process and the published criteria by which the exam will be judged.

Topics will include: How you can develop your leadership style and voice as a woman of color; how group interaction can help illuminate your skills set and strengths; learning how incorporate your true self into your work as a leader.

Hawk Highlights: NCAA Appearances in Wrestling, Track and Fencing

Hunter College wrestler Cliff Medina became an All-American when he finished in eighth place at 133 pounds during last weekend's NCAA Championships in Iowa. Medina was also named an Academic All-American for the second straight year. His season record was 32-9.

Tiffanie Clarke of the track and field team has a chance to become an All-American this coming weekend when she competes in the 55 meter dash at the NCAA Championships in Wisconsin. She is Hunter's first NCAA qualifier in women's track and field since 1991.

Randy Bresil of the men's fencing team finished 10th in saber during last weekend's NCAA Regionals at Columbia University. That performance qualified him for the NCAA National Championships at Brandeis University two weeks from now. His season record was 38-7.

The Hunter men's volleyball team won the Bronze Division at the Endicott University Tournament last weekend. Michael McFalls surpassed the 1000 kill mark for his four-year career during the tournament. He is just the fifth Hunter player to ever reach that milestone.
