POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES

 

 

The Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños, the only university-based institute dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of the Puerto Rican experience, seeks a Reference Librarian for the Centro Library and Archives to coordinate the Centro Library’s reference area.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Coordinate and oversee all aspects of reference services and supervise reference team.

• Participate in the development of the collection in all subject areas and all formats

• Design and implement plans for projects that expand services and integrate new technologies in the reference area.

• Provide reference service on a regular basis including phone and email requests.

• Conduct bibliographic instruction.

• Collaborate with archives staff and participate when appropriate in the outreach to donors and in the evaluation of donations.

• Support and promote staff development.

• Participate in Centro-wide committees

• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

 

Bachelor’s degree and four years of reference experience in special collections and/or an academic setting required.

MLS (Master in Library Science) degree and experience providing services to a diverse clientele preferred.

Strong and effective oral and written communication skills in both Spanish and English necessary.

Extensive knowledge of Puerto Rican history and culture with special emphasis on knowledge of the humanities and social sciences literature regarding Puerto Rico/Puerto Ricans in the United States and an excellent grasp on information in Puerto Rican/Latino Studies including web based resources desired.

Experience in all aspects of collection development such as evaluation and selection of materials.

Experience and/or interest in working with Puerto Rican/Latino faculty and students as well as with Puerto Rican non-profit, community and governmental organizations.

Must be able to work collaboratively within a team environment consisting of archivists, librarians and college assistants in addition to Centro-wide research and administrative staff.

Must also be available on nights and weekends.
