I have a couple of freelance journalist friends with websites that house all their work. I think it's a great way to organize your clips electronically- and you can then send a link to prospective jobs rather than the tedious attachments. Creating a website for my work is one of the items on a long list of to-dos that I haven't the time to address, but plan on building a simple site when I have the time. But the problem is that on-line clips are not only text-based stories. Sometimes they are multi-media "clips" with text, audio, and even streaming video. Does anyone think that a completely web-based portfolio makes any sense? That is, a prospective employer simply goes to the web site and read the clips and looks at any other multi-media work. There's an easy option to save as PDF under "print" if you're on a mac. Printouts should work, with the URL provided for confirmation on the printout or in a cover letter. In any e-mail communication, you would obviously include live links. There may well be some tricks to this I am overlooking, e.g. a link that is unstable, a page that is taken down. Perhaps it pays to save one's online clips as webpages.
