Like Bono and Sting, in the tradition of music and social activism, DJ Rekha's audiomix will close out the first night of a three day event that features artists from five different continents who have come together in New York to encourage all citizens to open their eyes, to express their opinions, and to react to important social issues. A multimedia art bazaar, If You See Something, Say Something, will be the backdrop for pioneer DJ and activist Rekha Malhotra's banhgra touch.
DJ Rekha's audiomix will rock the house beginning at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1st, bringing to a climax the opening reception for If You See Something, Say Something. This exhibit presents a range of creative responses to the troubling issues and anti-democratic developments that have punctuated the first decade of the new millenium. Rekha Malhotra, nominated best DJ by New York Magazine, selected by the New York Times Magazine as "one of the ten women of downtown music," and named one of the most influential South Asians in the United States by Newsweek magazine, is well known for having put bhangra music on the map in North America. She is also an activist working with the human rights organization Breakthrough. Through her company, Sangament, she organizes live concerts and provides music consulting services to record labels, cultural institutions, media companies, and corporations. Her next event will be her Basement Bhangra party at SOB's on Varick Street.
If You See Something, Say Something is sponsored by the Film & Media Department's Integrated Media Arts Program at Hunter College of the City University of New York (IMA/MFA), and EYEspeak (a graduate student association).
