It is worth checking out a widely published story about a new tape that has emerged of the moments when National Guardsmen fired on college students at Kent State University on May 4, 1970. Four students were killed. This is the NY Times link:

While there has long been a controversy surrounding the sequence of events that led to the killings at KSU, I call today's story to your attention less as news than as yet another interesting example of how new media technologies are being used in journalism. In this case, part of what makes this so fascinating is that the new technology resurrects and rapidly distributes old yet compelling news.

The tape itself, as well as a digitally enhanced version,  is being made available along with the story. And while the lingering controversy very well may remain muddled and far from resolved, it is quite extraordinary that virtually all interested parties can instantly and simultaneously listen to the tape and re-live the horror of those few moments.
