FYI. Particularly of interest to anyone considering MD/PhD programs.

Dear LSAMP Colleagues:

The Indiana University Graduate School would like to make you aware of our fall recruitment program, "Getting You into IU" for promising minority students who are underrepresented in doctoral studies in the natural and physical sciences, mathematics and technology disciplines. The recruitment event will held Wednesday, October 1 through Saturday, October 4, 2008, at Indiana University on the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses.

Invited students will participate in a number of activities designed to provide insight into life as a graduate student and allow them to make an informed decision about pursuing their graduate degree at IU.  Recruits will also be paired up with current graduate students from their prospective graduate program. Indiana University Graduate School will provide all travel, lodging, and meals for the students selected for this program.

"Getting You into IU" is sponsored in part by the National Science Foundation's Midwest Crossroads Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) program at IU.  This program is designed to encourage underrepresented minority students who are competitively eligible for Ph.D. programs in the STEM disciplines to apply to Indiana University.   The recruitment program includes:

  • Sessions on preparing competitive applications for graduate admission and fellowships
  • Pre-arranged individual and group meetings with IU faculty arranged separately for each participating student
  • Opportunity to sit in on classes in their discipline of interest
  • Tours of the STEM departments and research facilities
  • Formal and informal sessions with current graduate students to talk about the degree programs and graduate student life at Indiana University
  • Tours of the local area including Lotus World Music Festival in Bloomington and Circle City Classic in Indianapolis

Applications are invited from LSAMP students who are US citizens and permanent residents.

Thursday, August 28, 2008, is the deadline for faculty, research scientists and other mentors to recommend students for the "Getting You into IU" program.  To recommend your LSAMP students on-line, fill out the online recommendation form at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=7u6mrVeSV4o2tB0kClH3TA_3d_3d.  Please let your students know that you have recommended them, and inform them that their on-line applications must be completed at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=HNSPDez1mqjzl9kkHbm6bA_3d_3d.  Selections will be based on their area of academic interest, space availability and application date.
