Scenes from the 1st
Annual Back to School BBQ
TESTIMONIAL
As anticipated, this event was a HUGE success. Despite the
inclement weather, 190+ individuals braved the elements and found shelter in
the backyard of our gracious host and coordinator of the event, Dr. Lynne
Holden, MD. The guests included 33 physicians from specialties which included
transplant surgery, bariatric surgery, neurosurgery, family practice, internal
medicine, pediatrics, cardiology, obstetrics/gynecology, podiatry, plastic
surgery, emergency medicine and public health. The perseverance and enthusiasm
from the crowd seemed to not only inspire and motivate those in attendance, but
it seemed to affect even the weather.
As the clouds departed, wise words were imparted Dr.
Lynne Holden, other notable supporters of the Mentoring in Medicine program,
and most notably a speech from a surprise guest, Dr. Muriel Petioni who is 93
years old. Dubbed , "The Mother of Medicine in Harlem", this
accomplished, distinguished, and outspoken woman shared her words of wisdom and
invaluable advice for success not only in our medical pursuits, but in our life
pursuits as well (read more about this remarkable woman at http://www.thehistorymakers.com/biography/biography.asp?bioindex=119,
and http://www.educationupdate.com/archives/2007/MAY/html/medup-muriel.html).
Many premedical and medical students were in attendance.
It was a great opportunity for these students to network with such influential
people as Dr. Holden, Dr. Petioni, and many others. Of course, REGION IX WAS IN
THE BUILDING represented in strong numbers with schools such as SUNY Downstate,
Albert Einstein COM, NYCOM, Sophie Davis, Stonybrook, UMDNJ, Columbia, Mount
Sinai and CCNY MAPS!! (forgive me if I left anyone out, there are just soooo
many of you guys!!!) And of course, you know the Regional E-board was there,
representing strong!! At the end of the day, the food was great, we learned a
lot, made many new connections and nurtured a partnership with the Mentoring in
Medicine that SNMA will continue to support and cherish. Special thanks goes
out to Dr. Lynne Holden for hosting this event. We are all definitely looking
forward to the next one!!
