Hello,
I recently replaced Ambassador Marc Wall as Diplomat in Residence (DIR).
I understand that he had worked with you during his tenure at City
College.
This summer my family and I returned from a 12 year cycle overseas –
serving in Riyadh, Hanoi, Muscat, and Paris, most recently. Essentially,
it was my third cycle overseas. I served previously in Baghdad,
Guangzhou, and Jakarta, as well as in positions in the Department of State in
Washington in the Near East (Saudi Arabia/Yemen Country Officer), Economic and
Business (Financial Analyst), and Consular Bureaus.
In my new assignment in New York I would like to meet motivated and talented
diverse U.S. students to highlight opportunities in international affairs,
particularly the State Department. In fact, the Department seeks the best
of diverse America in every sense of the word – including those from
different genders, social, ethnic, regional, and academic backgrounds.
Your students studying business, management, economics, law, sociology,
foreign languages, and information technology – to name only a few
subjects! - can find places in today’s State Department, along with, of
course, those studying in fields more traditionally considered gateways to the
Foreign Service. (In my most recent position as Counselor for
Environment, Science, Technology, Health and Nonproliferation Affairs in Paris,
I relied on my early undergrad training in physics and chemistry.)
I would be delighted to discuss State Department careers and student programs
with interested CUNY students. Please contact me to set up a
mutually convenient time to visit for an information session about Foreign
Service careers and internship programs. By the way, an early priority
would be to focus interested students on the November 1 deadline for filing the
application for Summer 2009 internships in Washington and at our embassies and
consulates abroad. (In fact, it’s recommended that filing take
place NLT October 31, to make sure everything works!) A new internship
brochure can be found at: http://careers.state.gov/docs/4.0_Student_Intern_brochure.pdf. Other information can be found
at: http://careers.state.gov/students/programs.html#SIP. (In fact while the application process
hasn't opened yet for the Summer 2009 internships, students interested should
be encouraged to sign up for the email updates so they can receive an automatic
notification when it does open.)
I very much look forward to hearing from you soon.
Best regards, robert dry
