We are so good that everyone wants Hunter students!  Below is information regarding a summer program for minority and disadvantaged students who are FRESHMEN (going into your sophomore year Fall 2009).  The program will take place over the next three summers and students will receive intensive and extensive MCAT prep at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine for FREE!!!!  You will also receive a book stipend.  This is an IDEAL program for Hunter freshmen!  One of our greatest challenges is getting a great student, with a great GPA, into a highly selective medical school.  Why?  Because most of our students cannot get a really great MCAT score!  Most Hunter students speak English as a second language and this seems to prevent students from doing well on the Verbal section of the MCAT exam.  This program will give you the tools needed to get MCAT scores that will make schools such as Cornell, Columbia and NYU sit up and take notice!

Please take a moment to read below.  Mr. Lucio will be here on Tuesday, March 17th from 1-3PM in my conference room, 819 East.  Please come and ask questions and get information as the deadline is April 1st!  Please confirm that you will be attending as I can only accommodate 25 students in my conference room.

Subject: Summer MedPrep Program

Hello Mrs. Wood-Hill,

As per our phone conversation, I have attached our MedPrep Program information and application. I am available from 1pm-4pm, Tuesday, March 17th to speak to your students about MedPrep. Our application deadline is April 1, 2009, and you can visit our website at:

www.neramedprep.org

Program Summary:

The MedPrep Program is a tuition-free initiative targeting traditionally underrepresented and underserved New York City and New Jersey resident college freshman interested in attending medical school. MedPrep is a 3-year summer commitment designed to give students an opportunity to develop key skills and competencies important to success on the MCAT and in medical school.

  • Accepted New Jersey resident students begin the MedPrep program at New Jersey Medical School.
  • Accepted New York resident students begin the MedPrep program at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons.
  • The MedPrep Program is best suited for candidates without summer obligations as the program is full-time.
  • A small stipend is provided for meals and books.
  • There is no application fee.

The Northeast Regional Alliance (NERA) MedPrep Program is a partnership between New Jersey Medical School, Mount Sinai School of Medicine Center for Multicultural and Community Affairs, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Manhattan Staten Island Area Health Education Center.

The Program uniquely builds on the collective expertise of four outstanding institutions to expand health careers preparation for minority and disadvantaged students from junior high school through medical school with the goal of increasing competitiveness for medical school.  Ultimately, we expect that our scholars will have the humanism, professionalism and interpersonal skills required of a future physician caring for a diverse population.

If you require anything further feel free to contact me at your earliest convenience.

Best,
