Again this fall, I’d like to ask for your help again in spreading the word about PHE’s volunteer opportunities for Hunter students by forwarding publicity emails to the Pre-Health list-servs/interested students and allowing PHE volunteers to advertise PHE in the Pre-Health office. If you are able to help in this way please let me know so that I can have Hunter student volunteers follow-up with you soon by providing you with these materials.

 

Finally, Hunter PHE would like to host an info session at noon on Tuesday, September 1, but were told that they will not be able to reserve rooms on campus until after the re-chartering process is complete late next week.  I know that Maria was able to use the Pre-Health Conference room for a PHE event last Fall with your support, do you think it is possible for PHE to again use that space to provide interested Hunter students with an opportunity to learn more about PHE on Tuesday afternoon? I'm passing on a number of attachments (all are Word documents even if they don't look like it) from the Peer Health Exchange.  This is a wonderful opportunity for students who are interested in medicine, education, working with young people, leadership, etc.  Students in the program work with high school students in their schools to serve as health educators.  The students in the Honors College who joined the group last year are not just enthusiastic about it, but the program has helped focus them academically and has given them potential directions for post-college careers.

I know that this is a busy time, so I am forwarding the email that I sent you last week in hopes that you’ll have to time review and respond this week.
 
Primarily, I want to be sure that you think the statements for individuals on the Hunter Campus and volunteer job descriptions will be suitable tools for demonstrating to campus officials, PHE’s value for Hunter students as volunteers and high school students as program participants. If these materials will build the useful description that you envisioned, then please confirm that you will be able to forward those materials (attached) to the appropriate individuals on campus and in the honors college and let me know if / how I should best follow-up.
 
Lastly, I am currently looking for ways to reserve a room for an info session on Tuesday, September 1. Given the charter process will not be complete for clubs by then, we need to find a way to reserve a room outside of the realm of USG room reservations. Do you have suggestions as to how to do this?

I am back from California and had time to review your email one more time. I really appreciate your sharing the “PHE Statement to Department Heads and Campus Officials” with the Honors College advisors at Hunter. I am interested to know if they had further questions or suggestions as to how and when they can tell their students about PHE. Please let me know how I can help them introduce PHE opportunities to their students this Fall. If possible, please send me their email addresses or the email address of the appropriate coordinator so that Hunter volunteers can reach out to them in September to set up times for possible class announcements.
 
In regards to collecting additional specifics to share with Honor’s College directors across the City, I am hoping that sending them copies of volunteer job descriptions will be a useful addition to the memo, as they specifically outline the time commitment and requirements for volunteers. I have attached Leadership Council Member and Health Educator job descriptions here.
I think it is important to note that PHE will not have the capacity to train volunteers in Honors College programs outside of the colleges where we will have sites this year – Hunter and Lehman. We remain interested in exploring the suggestion you made earlier in the year to have a “CUNY Honor’s College PHE Site (or Program)” that could train volunteers from different colleges who are enrolled in Honors college programs. At this point, we are not prepared to lead programming for that group of volunteers this year. I appreciate your sharing info about PHE with other Honors College directors, but ask that if you do so, you make it clear to them that PHE is interesting in looking into this possibility more deeply in 2010-11 and will reach out to them again this year to learn more about the best ways to do so.
 
Please let me know if you know more about the specifics of a Hunter Honors College activities fair this Fall. I look forward to helping Hunter volunteers with their recruitment efforts on campus this Fall and know they will be eager to attend the fair if there is an opportunity to do so.

I'm now back from vacation and have had a chance to look at your attachments.  I think it would be best if Linda sent these out to departments at Hunter; I am not really the appropriate person to do so.  Or she might have Dean Robert Greenberg do so.  I will pass these on to my academic advisors and we'll talk about them when we meet next week.

I would like to get a document from you that I could send to the other Honors College directors.  The materials you've given me are helpful, but do you have something that describes literally what the students will be doing--e.g., "Students will spend X hours a week at one of our partner schools...."  I think this will go a long way in convincing toward convincing the directors that this is not only a good source of community service programming, but will benefit their students and the high school students in multiple ways.
