A message from the Post-Baccalaureate Student Group

Hi all,

I'm writing to announce a great new program available to all Hunter pre-health students, the Research Papers Workshop. The first workshop will take place on Thursday, March 15th at 7:45 PM in Hunter North (1403N).

Jordana Levett and Sharmeen Uddin, both graduate students in the Biology department at Hunter, have kindly volunteered to lead a discussion group focused on breaking down research papers.

During the session, they will explain the significance of the research, the techniques and analysis involved, and the research findings. For students interested in pursuing a career in the health fields, this should prove extremely helpful in preparing for entrance exams (i.e. reading MCAT passages and understanding the lab techniques used: Northern/Southern/Western Blots, PCR, etc.). This will also be useful for students currently taking classes that require students to read and analyze complex research papers.

For the inaugural workshop, Jordana and Sharmeen will be presenting the following microbiology papers, which you will find attached to this e-mail:

1. Specific host genes required for the killing of Klebsiela bacteria by phagocytes (Benghezal et. al.)

2. Role of magnesium and a phagosomal P-type ATPase in intracellular bacterial killing (Lelong et. al.)

Please prepare for the workshop by reading the papers ahead of time, and come with questions. Mark your calendars, and we look forward to seeing you March 15th!

Thanks,

Katharine Kelly
