"Addressing Childhood Obesity through School Food Procurement"

DATE:  April 17, 2012
TIME:  12 - 1:30 p.m. (CST)  students in lunchroom

Children consume up to half their daily calories at school, making school food environments an important target for obesity prevention. Food procurement practices, or the ways schools obtain food for school meal programs, determine what foods are available and affordable for schools to serve. This webinar will outline why school food procurement is key to changing the nutritional quality of school meals. The presenters will highlight schools' practices of procuring food for federally-funded school meal programs, the legal requirements schools must follow when procuring food, and schools' opportunities to leverage procurement practices for the improvement of school nutrition. The webinar will also address how the new federal nutrition requirements for school meals may affect schools' procurement practices.

Speakers include:

  • Jessica Donze Black, Project Director, Kids' Safe and Healthful Foods Project, Pew Health Group
  • Mary Marrow, Staff Attorney, Public Health Law Center
  • Jennifer Pelletier, Research Assistant, Public Health Law Center
  • Jean Ronnei, Food Service Director, St. Paul Public Schools

Moderator: Susan Bishop, Great Trays Access Coordinator, Minnesota Department of Health

Presented in Partnership by the American Heart Association and the Public Health Law Center.
