Project Title: Insulin, IGF-axis and Aggressive Prostate Cancer

 

Summary:  We are embarking on a clinical research study of prostate cancer at the Urology Clinic of Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx.  The purpose of this study is to examine the role that insulin and several insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) in the blood and in prostate tissue may play in more aggressive prostate cancer. As part of this study we are collecting questionnaire information regarding demographic, social and lifestyle factors, as well as medical and family history, which may play a role in prostate cancer.  

 

Position Summary:  The overall goal of this position is to train medical students in gaining research experience with clinical studies. Specifically, the medical student(s) will be trained to conduct a 30 minute phone interview with prostate cancer patients using a structured questionnaire. She/he will also be trained to perform questionnaire data entry into the study database. This position will further develop students’ inter-personal communication skills with patients into research setting. The position requires that student speaks fluently both English and Spanish languages. This is a part-time / per diem position.

  • Take the CITI training for Human Subject Research
  • Conduct phone interviews with study participant using a structured questionnaire
  • Perform questionnaire data entry into the study database
  • Report progress to PI and participate in project meetings (as needed)

 

Experience and Education Background:  Bachelor of Science (BS) degree preferably in biology, clinical laboratory or health sciences, chemistry, environmental or social sciences, or a bachelor of art (BA) in psychology, anthropology or sociology is required. Knowledge and familiarity with medical terminology is preferred. Experience with conducting surveys, interviews and/or data collection in diverse racial/ethnic populations or patients in clinical care is preferred.

 

Skills and Competencies:  Excellent oral and interpersonal communications skills in both English and Spanish language are required, since interviews will be conducted with patients that may prefer to speak Spanish. Knowledge and familiarity with medical terminology is required since the epidemiologic questionnaire will also collect information on medical history and medication use. Experience with data entry and ACCESS databases is preferred, but not required.  The overall goal of this position will be to train medical students in gaining research experience with clinical studies and epidemiological data collection.

 

Scope of Responsibility:  Conduct phone interviews with prostate cancer patients using a structured questionnaire. Perform questionnaire data entry into the study database. Report progress of the project to the PI, and participate in project meetings.
