  * School-Based Physical Education and Sports Programs, a recent study released by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), shows that contrary to most recent national data, school sports opportunities have generally increased in recent years. Specifically, the percentage of schools that offered PE at least 3 days a week decreased from 2000 to 2006, but the percentage of schools that required students in each grade to take some PE increased during the same period. Data on high school students show that participation in PE varies by grade level but not by gender or across racial groups. In addition, most state, district, and school officials GAO interviewed said opportunities to participate in interscholastic sports have increased, particularly for girls, and that many schools have responded to increased demand by adding new sports teams over the last few years.
  * Trends in Sunscreen Use Among U.S. High School Students: 1999-2009, a new study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health finds that sunscreen use among high school students declined between 1999 and 2009. In 1999, 34.7 percent of high school students reported sometimes, most of the time, or always using sunscreen when outside for at least an hour. In 2009, this number was 26.5 percent, marking a decline in the rate of use of over eight percentage points. The decline was greatest among white and Hispanic students, and in particular white female students.
  * Teens, Smartphones & Texting, a new report from the Pew Internet & American Life Project as a project of the Pew Research Center, reveals that U.S. teens are sending and receiving more mobile phone texts than in 2009. The volume of texting among teens has risen from 50 texts a day in 2009 to 60 texts for the median teen text user. In addition, smartphones are gaining teenage users. Some 23% of all those ages 12-17 say they have a smartphone and ownership is highest among older teens. This report examines the tools teens use to communicate, with a particular focus on mobile devices, and then places the use of those tools in the broader context of how teens choose to communicate with people in their lives.
