Host a Food Marketing Webinar Series:
What You Need to Know to Promote Healthy Eating in Your State!
June 19, 3:30-4:00 pm EST

With so little time and so much to keep up with, ASTHO, the Food Marketing Workgroup and NPLAN are collaborating to provide health officers and other public health professionals a series of short, to-the-point, informational webinars on national, state and local topics to address healthy eating.

Webinar #2: Food Marketing 101
The need to limit unhealthy food marketing to children has never been more urgent. According to the Institute of Medicine, most foods marketed to children are high in sugars, saturated fat, and salt—and marketing influences children’s food preferences and what they eat. Food companies spend $2 billion annually to reach children through television, the Internet, mobile phones, magazines, product placement in movies and television, product packages, toys, and anywhere else a logo or product image can be shown. Aggressive, widespread food marketing undermines parents’ attempts to feed their children healthfully. The webinar presenters will explain the amount and types of food marketing to children, policy options for dealing with marketing, evidence linking food marketing with children's poor diets and health, and the effectiveness of industry self-regulation.

Speakers:

Moderator: Samantha Graff, JD, Director of Legal Research, National Policy and Legal Analysis Network to Prevent Childhood Obesity, a project of ChangeLab Solutions
Mary Story, PhD, RD, Professor and Senior Associate Dean, University of Minnesota School of Public Health

Margo Wootan, DSc, Director of Nutrition Policy, Center for Science in the Public Interest
