SNAP BENEFITS ALLEVIATE THE INTENSITY AND INCIDENCE OF POVERTY

Including SNAP benefits in the calculation of a family’s resources provides a more accurate view of how SNAP raises the disposable income of recipients and improves the welfare of low-income families. The antipoverty effect of SNAP was particularly strong for children; in 2009, ERS researchers found that SNAP benefits reduced the depth of child poverty by 20.9 percent and the severity of child poverty by 27.5 percent.
