Description
Now serving New York City for more than 30 years, City Harvest is the world's first food rescue organization, dedicated to feeding the city's hungry men, women, and children.
This year, City Harvest will collect more than 38 million pounds of excess food from all segments of the food industry, including restaurants, grocers, corporate cafeterias, manufacturers, and farms. This food is then delivered free of charge to some 600 community food programs throughout New York City by a fleet of trucks and bikes. City Harvest helps feed the more than one million New Yorkers that face hunger each year.

While meeting the immediate need for food in the five boroughs, City Harvest ensures hungry New Yorkers have the food they need on an ongoing basis. Healthy Neighborhoods is a suite of programs designed to improve healthy food access and knowledge in four neighborhoods within New York City (fifth coming soon). Working directly with residents, businesses, and community organizations, City Harvest's goals are to relieve food insecurity, build nutritional knowledge at the individual, family, and community levels, and increase the access people have to affordable fresh fruits and vegetables.

City Harvest's cooking demo program integrates cooking demonstrations with affordable healthy food access points to increase nutrition and culinary awareness, familiarize residents with available foods and encourage healthy purchases. Shopping Matters, a program of Share Our Strength, involves dynamic two-hour tours held within supermarkets. Tour participants learn key shopping skills, such as how to buy fruits and vegetables on a budget, compare unit prices, read nutrition labels and identify whole grain foods.

We are seeking a Manager, Cooking Demos and Shopping Matters, to oversee all aspects of both programs including coordinating logistics with retail outlets (date, times, etc.), managing recruitment of participants, working closely with Volunteer Services to secure volunteers to lead and assist with demos and tours, training volunteers, managing survey data collection at events and periodically leading cooking demonstrations and Shopping Matters tours.
This position will report to the Senior Manager of Nutrition Education. About 40% of the role will be working off-site in underserved communities in all 5 boroughs, and 60% will be at City Harvest's office in midtown Manhattan. The Manager, Cooking Demos and Shopping Matters, will also support other educational and data gathering initiatives of the nutrition education department as needed.

Key Responsibilities:
· Oversee an increase in the number of demos and tours and devise an operating structure to support the expanded program.
· Coordinate, manage and implement City Harvest's cooking demonstration program (in 5 boroughs) and part of the Shopping Matters program (in 3 boroughs) in underserved areas in NYC.
· Serve as the liaison between the Nutrition Education Department, City Harvest retail managers and staff at retail outlets (supermarkets, bodegas, etc.) regarding all demo and tour events.
· Develop culinary and nutrition tips to accompany all recipes featured at cooking demonstrations.
· Train volunteers that will lead cooking demos and shopping tours.
· Manage volunteer teams implementing demos and tours.
· Determine recipe(s) to be prepared at all cooking demonstrations, scale recipes and develop shopping lists.
· Develop and manage process for recruiting Shopping Matters tour participants with Agency Relations, Community Impact and Nutrition Education teams.
· Work with the Fulfillment Coordinator to secure materials for all cooking demonstrations and Shopping Matters tours.
· In coordination with the Monitoring & Evaluation Department, ensure survey data is being collected accurately and timely
· Lead selected cooking demonstrations, following food safety guidelines, and Shopping Matters tours when full teams of volunteers are not secured.
· Support all Nutrition Education activities as needed in office and in field.
Requirements
· 2-3 years of relevant experience in project planning and management.
· BA required. Degree in the Culinary Arts preferred.
· Certification in food safety is a plus.
· Highly organized and detail-oriented with ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
· Outstanding project management skills including creating and achieving project goals and objectives.
· Exceptional interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in teams and with a wide variety of people in diverse communities.
· Excellent public speaking skills.
· A high degree of personal initiative and ability to work independently
· Fluency in Spanish a plus.
· Demonstrated willingness to embrace challenges as opportunities.
· Strong analytical thinker able to identify and apply learnings and knowledge generated from internal and external work.
· Travel throughout the 5 boroughs weekly.
· Excellent computer literacy: Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word, Excel and Outlook.

There are many fantastic benefits to a career at City Harvest. In addition to working to effect positive change in the lives of thousands of hungry New Yorkers, City Harvest offers its employees a business casual work and learning environment with generous benefits including medical, dental, life insurance, short- and long-term disability insurance, 403(b) and generous paid time off.
