Culture and Literacy:
Bridging Communications Gaps!

Culture and its relation to cancer is an important but poorly understood concept. Culture influences patients' and communities' perceptions of cancer risk, their trust in oncology professionals, and their approach to cancer treatment including clinical research. This webinar, the second in our series, will focus on culture and how its incorporation into clinical practice may help reduce cancer health disparities across the cancer care continuum.

NCI's Office of Communications and Education offers this webinar education series, Cancer Classroom, for early career public health professionals or those new to oncology. This series provides the educational guidance, tools, and resources necessary for professionals to address cancer as a public health issue.

At the end of the presentation the participant will be able to:

1. Identify the role of culture and literacy for improving cancer communications.

2. Examine the unique contributions of culture and literacy for reducing health disparities.

3. Identify ways to integrate cultural and literacy considerations into community outreach programs, clinical practice and cancer innovations (e.g. biobanking).

4. Identify resources relating to cancer, culture and literacy.
