Food Fight in California over GMO Labeling
If you’ve been following my writing over the past few months, you know that I’ve been writing about the food industry’s dirty tactics in the fight over California’s Proposition 37, which would require GMO foods to be labeled. As Election Day nears, the fight is getting even dirtier, while the No on 37 campaign’s millions of dollars in deceptive ads are starting to pay off<http://appetiteforprofit.us4.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=6d92905ea6348fcc3f1b61a3e&id=bdf6ea8f21&e=cfef0e14a2>. But with 61 other nations requiring GMO labels<http://appetiteforprofit.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d92905ea6348fcc3f1b61a3e&id=b872bb5a99&e=cfef0e14a2>, why are Monsanto and friends fighting so hard to keep Americans in the dark?

Each election season, proponents and opponents of the various initiatives on the California ballot hope for the state’s major newspaper endorsements. While you can’t expect every paper to endorse your side, Proposition 37, which would require labeling of foods produced using genetic engineering, seems to have had a string of incredibly bad luck. As I recently explained<http://appetiteforprofit.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6d92905ea6348fcc3f1b61a3e&id=067820c9ad&e=cfef0e14a2>, University of California at Davis agriculture researchers are heavily influenced by the funding they receive from Monsanto and other big biotech players. This conflict of interest explains in part why we are seeing several UC Davis professors author reports and op-eds opposing California’s Proposition 37, which would require labeling of foods containing GMOs.
