Bronx Health REACH e-blast October 8, 2012 – Please share with others who may be interested!

Bronx Health REACH Health Disparity Workgroup – next meeting October 12th
For the past decade, Bronx Health REACH has been advocating for equal access to health care in New York City. As part of this effort, we have been working on the passage of a Health Equity Bill in the New York State Legislature that would ensure all patients are given the same quality of care for outpatient specialty services at teaching hospitals (read more about this issue here<http://www.bronxhealthreach.org/our-work/policy-and-system-change/health-policy/>). If you are interested in learning more about this issue, please join our monthly Health Disparities Workgroup. Our next meeting is scheduled for Friday, October 12th from 1:30 pm to 3 pm at Cosmopolitan Church of the Lord Jesus at 39 W. 190th St. in the Bronx.

Website Launched for Partnership for a Healthier NYC
The Partnership for a Healthier NYC has launched its new website, www.healthiernyc.org<http://www.healthiernyc.org>.  On the site, you can learn more about the community transformation work that Bronx Health REACH and others are doing citywide, and the four areas within which we are working: Healthy Eating, Active Living, Tobacco-Free Living and Alcohol.  In addition, the Partnership also launched an advertising campaign focused on Healthy Eating and Active Living, which will be featured in the subways and on bus stop shelters.  The ads will begin to appear in local newspapers and in public transit venues.

School Food Webinar – October 9
As a result of the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act, major changes are being made to improve the food kids eat in schools.  To ensure faith and community organizations understand what the new school meal standards mean and are ready for these changes, the US Department of Agriculture will be hosting a webinar on Tuesday, October 9th at 3pm EST, entitled “The School Day Just Got Healthier<http://www.fns.usda.gov/cnd/healthierschoolday/default.htm>.”  Participants will learn more about the tools that are available to help share information about the changes with your congregation or organization, and how you can help to make the day healthier at your place of worship. This webinar is a great way to join the conversation on healthy eating.  First Lady Michelle Obama has recorded a back to school message to students on the new school meal changes that you can watch by clicking here<http://www.fns.usda.gov/cnd/healthierschoolday/images/FLOTUS.wmv>.   Please open this link<https://www311.livemeeting.com/cc/usdafns/join?id=RD6KGT&role=attend&pw=n5%60%26%5D%3ENFp> on October 9th to join the webinar.  For telephone access, please dial 1-800-621-9468, access code 2916980#.  If you have any questions, please email [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.

Harlem River Festival “It’s My Park Day” Event – October 20
On Saturday, October 20, the Harlem River Working Group is holding a “2012 Harlem River Festival” event at Roberto Clemente State Park.  On this day, the community will have a chance to attend and participate in what can only be described as a street fair on the land and in the water.  This is the third annual public event organized by the Harlem River Working Group (HRWG), a group of community organizations, governmental agencies and other commercial stakeholders, focused on improving environmental quality and access to and along the Harlem River -- from Randall’s Island to the Hudson River in Bronx County, New York City. Formed in 2009, HRWG has met monthly to organize and develop goals to ensure that a green corridor is established along as much of the length of the Harlem River as possible, with habitat buffer, bike and walking path greenways and river access points.

Food Day – October 24
October 24, 2012 will be the second annual national Food Day – a day aimed at raising awareness and promoting safer, healthy diets; supporting a sustainable food supply; protection of farm workers, animals and the environment; and increasing the accessibility to healthy and often locally grown foods.  To celebrate Food Day, organizations and individuals are encouraged to facilitate or attend any number of different events and activities, such as:  organizing a cooking class or a visit to a community garden or Farmer’s Market; or encouraging your organization, local restaurant or school to serve a special Food Day entrée sourced locally.  You can get started planning an event with the Food Day Organizers Guide<http://foodday.org/files/FoodDay2012_OrganizersGuide.pdf>.
