[seismograph]There's been a lot of interesting discussion on the internet recently about the duty of scientists. Last month, six Italian geologists were convicted of manslaughter for their failure to warn people of the risk level of the 2009 L’Aquila earthquake, which killed 308 people. The court's decision sparked debate. Writing for Scientific American, David Ropeik expresses his belief that the scientists, while undeserving of manslaughter convictions, were culpable of an irresponsible failure to communicate. "There is a subtext here that brings us back to the role of scientists as communicators and educators, particularly scientists with expertise about issues involving risk," he says<https://ams.nyas.org/nyasssa/ecmssamsganalytics.click_through?p_mail_id=E163516A5075743B1C34501>. In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the re-intensified focus on climate change has prompted similar statements. This<https://ams.nyas.org/nyasssa/ecmssamsganalytics.click_through?p_mail_id=E163516A5075743B1C34502> Guardian article by John Abraham and this<https://ams.nyas.org/nyasssa/ecmssamsganalytics.click_through?p_mail_id=E163516A5075743B1C34503> Nature article by Jeremy Grantham both call upon the scientific community to be more assertive in order to deliver more impactful, credible wake-up messages. On the other hand, Erik Klemetti, in this<https://ams.nyas.org/nyasssa/ecmssamsganalytics.click_through?p_mail_id=E163516A5075743B1C34504> Wired article, and Stuart Firestein, in this<https://ams.nyas.org/nyasssa/ecmssamsganalytics.click_through?p_mail_id=E163516A5075743B1C34505> Scientific American article, claim that people have unrealistic expectations of scientists. There is sure to be more debate on this subject. Germanely, the Center for Communicating Science<https://ams.nyas.org/nyasssa/ecmssamsganalytics.click_through?p_mail_id=E163516A5075743B1C34506>, at Stony Brook University, offers a range of programs to help scientists "share the meaning and implications of their work," based on the belief that it is an ethical responsibility and "that an engaged public encourages sound public decision-making." See below for an upcoming CCS event<https://ams.nyas.org/nyasssa/ecmssamsganalytics.click_through?p_mail_id=E163516A5075743B1C34507>, featuring actor and co-founder Alan Alda.

In this lecture, Peter shares stories about the science, challenges (including a crash landing in Sumatra!), and exhilaration of his expeditions.
