The New School’s Tishman Environment and Design Center (TEDC) seeks a research
fellow with a recent doctorate in policy, planning, geography, food studies,
or a related field to conduct research on urban food system governance
structures, policies and programs and their contribution to sustainability and
resilience. The project will examine the urban food policymaking process from
a comparative perspective, and will begin to develop metrics and indicators to
measure the impacts of food policies on urban resilience and sustainability.
The ideal candidate will have expertise in food security, food justice, the
ecological dimensions of food systems, and policy analysis and assessment with
a focus on food systems.

The TEDC Post-doctoral Research Fellow in Urban Food Systems will work with
faculty in TEDC and the Environmental Studies program and potentially with
external colleagues from the UK, Netherlands, Germany and US to conduct
research on urban food systems that matches his/her interests and expertise.

The Fellow will also be expected to teach two courses per year that match his/
her expertise and the needs of the Environmental Studies program.

Potential areas of research include:
•       Comparative analysis of urban food policymaking, including cross-city
policy analysis focusing on one or more areas of food policymaking (e.g.,
public health, planning, infrastructure development)
•       Measurement and valuation of urban ecosystem services of food
production infrastructure
•       Development, measurement and analysis of indicators of food systems
sustainability
•       Analysis of urban food movements and their impacts on urban
policymaking

Minimum Qualifications:
This position is open to social scientists from diverse backgrounds including
urban policy, city and regional planning, urban geography, politics, food
studies, or related fields. Applicants must have completed their Ph.D. by the
position start date. Strong organization, communication and writing skills are
required. Candidates will be also expected to teach two courses per year, one
introductory undergraduate course and one advanced undergraduate course, in an
area of their expertise for the Environmental Studies program.

Preferred Qualifications:
•       Demonstrated expertise in qualitative research methods; experience
with quantitative methods desired
•       Familiarity with indicators and background in policy evaluation
methods
•       Knowledge of urban food policy and policymaking processes, and urban
sustainability/resilience
•       Excellent research design, organization, communication, and writing
skills
•       Experience teaching and course development
