February 18, 2013 Dear Students, The Department of Communication Studies at The College of New Jersey has launched its first summer study abroad program, a three week health communication internship in Durban, South Africa. The opportunity encourages students from any college or university to learn how South African health communication professionals save lives through "Entertainment-Education", embedding health promotion and risk reduction messages in song, dance, drama, comics, radio, and top-ranked TV dramas. As leader of the internship, I have scheduled sessions with some of Sub-Saharan Africa's leading professionals in Entertainment-Education (EE), several of whom I met last summer in order to prepare the groundwork for this internship. I am teaching a course this spring (Advanced Student-Faculty Research - Health, Development, and Entertainment-Education)that gives students some background on EE, as well as an opportunity to begin designing health communication campaigns that can be adapted to a variety of situations or channels, including, I anticipate, mobile phone formats and games. Since many people have mobile phones in developing countries, anything that can be conveyed through that channel has a good chance of reaching difficult-to-reach populations.
