Brief Description: Whether or not you classify overeating as an addiction, there is much to learn about behavior change from the study of addiction science. With some modification, many addiction treatment strategies can be utilized successfully by dietitians to promote and maintain the behavioral changes needed for weight loss and maintenance. This session will teach 8 of these strategies and the situations in which they will be most helpful.

Full Description and Presenter Info: Jessica Setnick is known for her ability to bridge mental health issues and nutrition. This is the first presentation of its kind - rather than arguing for or against overeating as an addiction, Jessica suggests that addiction treatment strategies can be applied successfully to overeating behaviors, regardless of their nature. In 2007, Jessica went through a 32-week educational program as the support person for a family member with an addiction. During and since that time, she has used the addiction treatment strategies she learned to help her own patient population - individuals struggling with eating disorders - to change their thoughts and behaviors related to eating. Observing a sea change in the success these patients experienced in meeting their goals, Jessica expanded her findings to those individuals without known eating disorders, who simply wanted to change their eating behaviors. Jessica helps move the conversation away from the 12-step model of abstinence and powerlessness and toward an better understanding of each individual's complicated relationship with food. Through The American Dietetic Association Pocket Guide to Eating Disorders and Eating Disorders Boot Camp, Jessica shares her strategies with health professionals around the world. A past chair of the Behavioral Health Nutrition Practice Group, Jessica has been recognized many times for her work, for example Today's Dietitian Top 10 Dietitians Making Difference, the BHN Award for Excellence in Practice, and the inaugural Texas Dietetic Association Outstanding Nutrition Educator Award.
