Environmental Justice/Environmental Health Intern—

Duties:

Gather baseline community data through telephone, door-to-door, internet and written, surveys as well as governmental/agency reports on health conditions in SoutheastQueens neighborhoods; Do necessary on-going follow-up interviews with residents regarding health on designated dates; Correlate data from follow-up interviews with environmental data to determine possible links between health and environmental episodes; Collect anecdotal material and historical documentation of history of Southeast Queens communities and begin to speculate about possible correlations to past and current health conditions; Research issues for upcoming reports such as toxicants and environmental impacts; air, soil or water pollution in community; environmental policies and decisions that may impact community health; Help organize and implement community forums, summits, film screenings, fundraisers and video-conferences on community health, environmental impacts, environmental justice; Analyze emissions or other environmental data, determining levels and evaluate overallair, water or soil quality of specific communities.

Where:  Idlewild Park Preserve located in Springfield Gardens, Queens and Southeast Queens Communties.

Qualifications: Graduate Student with major or equivalent in public health, environmental and occupational sciences, epidemiology, community health,   along with strong desire to work with a variety of people, especially children. Must have strong organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and high level of self-motivation, enthusiasm, and initiative. Internship must be university/college sanctioned.

Stipend: Equivalent of $10.00 per hr.
