The Brock Lecture, Award and Visiting Professorship in Pediatrics was established by Millie and Richard Brock in 1995 on the 100th anniversary of the NYAM Section on Pediatrics. The Award sponsors a nationally recognized leader in pediatrics to receive the Brock Award for distinguished contributions to pediatrics, deliver the annual Brock Lecture, and engage in 1-2 day visiting professorship at a New York-area pediatrics training program. The Brock Lecture held at NYAM must address issues concerned with providing care for underserved children.

The 2013 awardee, Stephen R. Cook, MD, MPH, will deliver his lecture, "Community Strategies for Childhood Obesity: A Five-year Experience," at The New York Academy of Medicine.

Dr. Cook will meet with students, residents, fellows, staff and faculty in General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at Cohen Children's Medical Center (CCMC) of the North Shore-LIJ Health System. Among the topics to be discussed are CCMC's recently launched comprehensive weight management program, and a major new initiative to improve obesity screening and treatment in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

About the Speaker(s)
Stephen R. Cook, MD, MPH is dual board certified in adult and pediatric medicine, and is an assistant professor of Pediatric in the division of General Pediatrics at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC). He published the first national study on the Metabolic Syndrome among U.S. teens and has a career development award from NHLBI to study cardiometabolic effects of obesity and tobacco on youth. Dr Cook has presented nationally on his the epidemiology of central obesity, tobacco exposure and metabolic syndrome in children and teens.

Dr. Cook directs studies for childhood obesity for the division General Pediatrics. He has conducted a number of key studies for the Monroe County and Greater Rochester region on the epidemiology of childhood obesity as well as community level nutrition information. He completed a clinical based intervention for improving screening and behavioral counseling to parents through primary care offices across Monroe County. He now conducts that training project with primary practices in the 5 country region surrounding Rochester. He serves on local committees, including Chairman of the Childhood Obesity Committee for the NYS Chapter of the AAP. He completed a county wide pediatric obesity prevalence study, and has conducted community epidemiologic studies on the distribution of food outlets as well as physical activity location/resources across the county. His work has supported and leveraged additional funding resource to the greater Rochester area to address childhood obesity strategies in the settings of childcare, elementary schools, primary care practices and a community policy coalition.

Dr. Cook is an accomplished primary provider and obesity researcher who is able to internalize, interpret and communicate detailed clinical and community research information into powerful messages to community and policy stakeholders at the regional, state and federal level.
