Announce their 6th Summer School on the Social Determinants of Health

8- 12 July 2013

 

 

 

Applications are now open for the five-day Summer School on the Social Determinants of Health, organised by the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at UCL.

The non-residential summer school is designed for two types of participant:

•             those who already work in the field of public health and want to refresh their knowledge of population health with a focus on social determinants,

•             those who are considering a career in public health or related research such as social epidemiology and health policy (national and global).

The course is multi-disciplinary and covers topics including social stratification, work, gender, ethnicity, social-biological translation, life course epidemiology, mental health, oral health, disability, inequality and human rights, Russian mortality crisis, tackling health Inequalities, public health ethics, politics of health and equity, and globalization and health.

Professor Sir Michael Marmot, former chair of the WHO Commission on Social Determinants of Health, the Marmot Review in England, and the European Review of Social Determinants of Health and the Health Divide, will open the summer school with a presentation on the social determinants of health and close the week with a lecture and discussion on national and international policy development.

 The programme will be presented by experts in the field through lectures, workshops, and group discussions. A particular feature of the course is the opportunity for participants to explore their interests through discussion with leading researchers and with participants from a range of disciplines.

 There are two evening events:

Professor Carolyn Stephens from Universidad Nacional de Tucumān will give a lecture on:  ‘Ecology and global health.’

Naomi Eisenstadt CB, Senior Research Fellow at the University of Oxford will give a lecture on:  ‘Policy making on social determinants of child outcomes:  a view from inside government.’
