AmeriCorps works_Flint

Dear Friend of FoodCorps,

Every day, in communities around the country, our service members are connecting kids to healthy food. This school year nearly 50,000 kids have participated in hands on food education with a FoodCorps service member. And they’re not alone.

Did you know that FoodCorps is a proud member of the AmeriCorps service network? The impact our 80 service members have is part of a larger picture, one that includes 75,000 AmeriCorps service members nationwide solving critical problems with hands-on solutions.

This week we celebrated AmeriCorps Week by taking some time to reflect on what makes the AmeriCorps model work for us. Second year service member Kirsten Gerbatsch described the power of service like this:

“Service work is true, selfless civic engagement that allows us to learn, teach, and become intimately involved in our communities. Service challenges us to engage with specific issues and rise to the occasion of developing solutions to these problems, not sitting around and complaining; we are compelled to stand up, get our hands dirty, and make a positive difference in the world.

Deb Eschmeyer, FoodCorps co-founder and Director of Policy and Partnerships, used the feedback from service members like Kirsten to pen a piece that captures all of the ways in which AmeriCorps works. You can read that piece, and more about what inspires our team around the country, here.

And you can listen to some public service announcements made by our service members in Iowa, for local station KDEC, here.

We are so proud of our alumni and current service members who have chosen to be a part of this incredible national service network. They are getting their hands dirty and are living proof that AmeriCorps works, creating lasting change in communities from Oregon to Maine, Mississippi to New Mexico.
