Because the weather is so unpredictable, there’s usually a lull in food- and nutrition-related activities during the winter months. March 20th Force Fed: How Food Industry Lies Undermine Public Health with Michele Simon, author of Appetite for Profit.  Begins at 5 pm, the talk runs from 5:30-7 pm.  At the CUNY School of Public Health, 2180 Third Avenue (at 119th Street), in the Auditorium on the Second Floor.  You'll need picture ID to get in the building.  The closest subway line is the 6 train stop at 116th and Lexington Avenue.  Go east one block on 116th and North 3 blocks on Third.  The school is on the left corner of 119th and Third.

South Bronx Community Action Network - March 20th
Join City Harvest and other enthusiastic neighbors for the next meeting of the South Bronx Community Action Network, to discuss how we can work with local retailers and partners to bring more fresh fruits and vegetables to the neighborhood. Bronx Health REACH Nutrition & Fitness Workgroup Meeting – March 21st

This meeting will focus on school-based nutrition, fitness, and wellness initiatives. Just Food Conference – March 29-30th
The Just Food Annual Conference will be held Friday, March 29 and Saturday, March 30.  This conference brings together local food lovers and food justice advocates, Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) members, community gardeners, urban and rural farmers, food professionals, students and entrepreneurs for hands-on workshops, discussions, skills-building sessions, and good food. The conference focuses on cooking and food preservation techniques, CSA trends, and the food justice movement in NYC and beyond, as well as ways to create and support good food projects in local communities. Playstreets Application – Due March 31st
Want to organize a Playstreet for your neighborhood to give kids and residents a chance to play outside?  Play Streets are car-free streets on quieter blocks that provide school children and communities with space to carry out active recess, physical education and structured or unstructured physical activity. If you would like to bring this opportunity to your community, please complete the Expression of Interest<http://transalt.org/files/campaigns/pedestrian/playstreets/PlayStreetsEOI.pdf> form as soon as possible.  A representative from the NYC Department of Health will contact you afterwards to help you select an appropriate site. Even if you're not absolutely certain you want to host a Play Street this summer, you are welcome to fill this out to so the City knows people want more resources and support for this program.  Next, you will need to complete the final Play Streets permit application<http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/downloads/pdf/cdp/playstreets-community-permit.pdf> by March 31st.  You will need to obtain the signature of your local community board district manager and the precinct community affairs officer. It takes roughly 6-8 weeks for your Play Streets permit to be issued.  To host a successful Play Street, you will need to plan activities and logistics, which may include recruiting volunteers or activity leaders. Bronx Health & Wellness Summit – April 6th

The Bronx Borough President’s Office is organizing the Bronx Health and Wellness Summit to be held on Saturday, April 6th from 8:00am-5:00pm at Fordham University, Rose Hill Campus, 441 East Fordham Road.  The keynote speaker will be Dr. Max Gomez, CBS-2 Medical Reporter.  Admission is free, and breakfast and lunch provided.  There will be Spanish language breakout sessions. Healthy Minds in Healthy Bodies Physical Education Forum – April 15th

The Women’s City Club’s Physical Education in City Public Schools Task Force is hosting the “Healthy Minds in Healthy Bodies: The Case for Implementing a Full Physical Education Curriculum in NYC’s Public Schools” Forum on Monday, April 15th.  A panel of experts will discuss the link between physical education and academic achievement, the obstacles to change, and the opportunities for improvement. 2013 Nurse Corps Scholarship Program – Deadline May 2nd
Enrolled students seeking an Associate’s in Nursing, Bachelor’s of Science Nursing, or Nurse Practitioner degree and who wish to serve at least two years in a center that has a Critical Shortage of nurses are eligible to apply to the 2013 NURSE Corps<http://www.hrsa.gov/loanscholarships/NURSECORPS/> Scholarship Program. South Bronx CSA Registration Now Open
Want 20 weeks of affordable, fresh, organic vegetables from a local farm? Friends of Brook Park invites you to join the South Bronx CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program as it enters its tenth year of existence. The mission of the South Bronx CSA is to create affordable access to locally and organically grown vegetables for everyone in the South Bronx and beyond.  The South Bronx CSA works with Sergio Nolasco and his organic farm located in Sussex County, New Jersey. Beginning in June through October, each Wednesday from 2pm-7pm, members pick up their farm share at Brook Park (Brook Avenue & East 141st St).  The farm share usually includes 8 types of vegetables, enough for 2-3 people. Sliding scale prices are and payment installments are available, and SNAP/EBT is accepted.
