USDA Farm to School Grant Program Seeks Volunteer Grant Reviewers
USDA’s Farm to School Grant Program is designed to increase the availability of local foods in schools and help give children a sense of where their food comes from. Last year we received over 400 proposals; this year we expect at least that many, if not more.

The success of this popular grant program is dependent on having a robust team of reviewers to help score and rank proposals. If you have farm to school experience and a little time to lend to our program, please consider joining us as volunteer reviewer. Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program Helps Boost Consumption at Low-Income Elementary Schools
A new study conducted by USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service found that students at elementary schools participating in USDA’s Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program consumed 15 percent more fruits and vegetables. Almost all students tried the fruit and vegetable snacks (97% and 84% of students, respectively); and a substantial majority ate most or all of snacks provided (86% and 61%, respectively). Team Nutrition Grants Now Available!
The request for applications for the FY 2013 Team Nutrition Training Grants is now posted on Grants.gov and the Team Nutrition web site. These grants are for state agencies to expand and enhance their training programs that incorporate and implement the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and USDA Foods in meals served under the National School Lunch Program or the Child and Adult Care Food Program.

States must apply Team Nutrition’s three behavior-focused strategies in their proposals:

  * Provide training and technical assistance to school nutrition foodservice professionals to enable them to prepare and serve nutritious meals that appeal to students.
  * Provide fun and interactive nutrition education for children, teachers, parents and others caregivers.
  * Build school and community support for creating healthy school environments that are conducive to healthy eating and physical activity.

In the past, Team Nutrition Grants have supported several farm to school-related proposals. Applications are due by June 5, 2013. A Future Where School Cafeterias are Overflowing with Local Flare
I was recently invited to give a presentation at the 2nd annual Ohio Farm to School Conference. Conference organizers asked me to address the future of farm to school: where did we want to be in ten years?

By chance I’d asked a similar question of colleagues at Portland Public Schools a decade earlier. At the time, we were just starting to incorporate more local and regional products into the cafeteria and we thought a creative writing exercise would help us crystallize our goals and focus our work. Vegetable Processing Facility “Northern Girl” Gears up for Fresh Veggies
It may be spring time, but the staff of Northern Girl already has big plans for fall, when their new vegetable processing facility officially opens in Van Buren, Maine. Funded in part through a USDA Rural Development Rural Business Enterprise Grant<http://links.govdelivery.com:80/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkPTIwMTMwNDE2LjE3NzY3NDcxJm1lc3NhZ2VpZD1NREItUFJELUJVTC0yMDEzMDQxNi4xNzc2NzQ3MSZkYXRhYmFzZWlkPTEwMDEmc2VyaWFsPTE3NTEzMzkwJmVtYWlsaWQ9c2FrMkBjZGMuZ292JnVzZXJpZD1zYWsyQGNkYy5nb3YmZmw9JmV4dHJhPU11bHRpdmFyaWF0ZUlkPSYmJg==&&&106&&&http://www.rurdev.usda.gov/BCP_rbeg.html> (RBEG), the new 4,000 square foot facility will allow for the potential for year round processing of locally-grown vegetables.

This project is a really valuable asset – not only does it support a growing Maine business and 12 rural northern Maine farms, but it also puts fresh, locally-grown vegetables, “bounty from the county,” on the shelves for consumers in Maine and other parts of New England to enjoy. It reflects USDA Rural Development’s solid commitment to support local and regional food systems.
