The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences offers a volunteer opportunity to gain research experience in the behavioral issues related to cancer. The research volunteer would be a valued team member for a study that examines sun protection practices among family members of melanoma patients. The volunteer would be responsible for meeting with melanoma patients in doctors’ clinics, recruiting family member research participants over the telephone, confirming eligibility and ensuring that research participants complete their data collection requirements. Volunteers would also have the opportunity to contribute to manuscripts resulting from these research studies.

Good time management, organizational and communication skills are essential. Computer skills are desirable including experience with word processing, Microsoft Access and Microsoft Excel. The volunteer must be available to work on the studies starting in mid-spring throughout the summer of 2013.

This placement provides an excellent opportunity for research career development in a healthcare setting through the development of patient contact and psychology and public health research skills applicable to all areas of psychology research. Opportunities to attend Departmental didactic seminars will also be available.
