A Place at the Table Film Screenings – May 29th & Host Your Own Screening
The Partnership for a Healthier NYC<http://healthiernyc.org/> is offering opportunities for organizations to host screenings of the groundbreaking documentary A Place at the Table<http://www.takepart.com/place-at-the-table>. This film examines the issue of food insecurity and hunger through the experience of three people: Barbie, a single Philadelphia mother who grew up in poverty and is trying to provide a better life for her two kids; Rosie, a Colorado fifth-grader who often has to depend on friends and neighbors to feed her and has trouble concentrating in school; and Tremonica, a Mississippi second-grader whose asthma and health issues are exacerbated by the largely empty calories her hardworking mother can afford. Their stories are interwoven with insights from experts including sociologist Janet Poppendieck, author Raj Patel and nutrition policy leader Marion Nestle; ordinary citizens like Pastor Bob Wilson and teachers Leslie Nichols and Odessa Cherry; and activists such as Witness to Hunger’s Mariana Chilton, Top Chef’s Tom Colicchio and Oscar®-winning actor Jeff Bridges. Ultimately, A Place at the Table shows us how hunger poses serious economic, social and cultural implications for our nation, and that it could be solved once and for all, if the American public decides that making healthy food available and affordable is in the best interest of us all. If you would like to organize a screening of the film at your own organization, please fill out the attached form and submit your request to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]><mailto:[log in to unmask]>.

There will be a screening of A Place at the Table in the Bronx on May 29, 2013 at 6pm at the Bronx Documentary Center (614 Courtlandt Avenue at 151st St). “Slow Zone” Applications – Due May 31st
Do car and truck drivers break the speed limit in your neighborhood? Would you like to do something about it? A new program that’s proven to reduce speeding on local streets is now accepting applications<http://transalt.org/campaigns/enforcement/slowzones?utm_source=transalt.org-streetbeat-Mar282013&utm_medium=web&utm_content=version1&utm_campaign=2013POGO%20Reduce%20Dangerous%20Driving>, but only for a limited time. Neighborhood Slow Zones reduce the speed limit on residential streets from 30 mph to 20 mph. That makes your streets safer for biking and walking every day. Slow Zones can help bring families peace of mind because of the safer speed restrictions. For the ‘Slow Zone” New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) will install safety improvements that reduce crashes, cut-through traffic and noise on your streets. The DOT is accepting applications to the Neighborhood Slow Zone program<http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/about/slowzones.shtml> through May 31st, 2013. Community boards, civic associations, Business Improvement Districts, elected officials or other community institutions such as schools or churches can apply. Transportation Alternatives is interested in helping community groups with Slow Zone applications. For more information, visit the T.A. website: http://transalt.org/campaigns/enforcement/slowzones

New Report about Federally-Funded Food Programs in NYC
The Citizens’ Committee for Children recently released a report, From Farm to Table: The Use of Federally-Funded Food Programs at New York City Farmers' Markets<http://nynp.biz/12all/lt.php?c=953&m=1039&nl=22&s=8cbfee85dfb60d1c80b4a921601c8fb3&lid=100695&l=-http--www.cccnewyork.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/CCCFarmersMarketReport.May-2013.pdf>, about how low-income families are using federally-funded food programs to purchase produce at farmers' markets throughout New York City, thereby enabling program participants to access fresh, local foods. The study also confirms that federal food programs are especially important to economically sustain markets in neighborhoods with high poverty rates, where many residents use these programs to buy food. Lastly, CCC's findings highlight additional opportunities to increase food program usage in New York City's farmers' markets. To this end, the study makes recommendations that, if implemented, would increase child and family access to fresh fruits and vegetables.
